A beautiful photo, John; thank you for sharing this. As William Blake once wrote, “When thou seest an eagle, thou seest a portion of genius. Lift up thy head!”
Fortunately, the genius embedded in the second paragraph of the Declaration—that governments exist only to secure the rights of the people to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that they derive their just power (an important qualification—“just”) from the consent of the governed—is reflected in the innate majesty of the eagle. And no matter how craven and delusional the Trumpsters in Congress may be, these noble words will remain, like an eagle majestically surveying his domain, to arouse the citizens to throw off Trump and any others who perpetrate a “long train of abuses and usurpations…evincing a design to reduce us under absolute despotism.” No matter what happens, let us cherish these words!
