A good illustration of the Manichaean fallacy: the belief that your good or bad fortune (or good or bad character) can be attributed to a benign god or a malicious devil. But Lady Fortuna simply rolls the dice… If “being good” is seen as simply a means to a self-serving end (a divine reward), it is fraudulent. Conversely, if virtuous behavior is rooted in wisdom—our awareness of our interconnectedness with all other life—it is authentic, and fortune, good or bad, has no power to disturb us.
