A succinct and accurate analysis of Trump’s culpability. But I fear that the poisonous hatreds he stirred up in the white lumpen proletariat—those left behind by globalization and the corporate “race to the bottom” for cheap overseas labor—will not go away even if he lands in prison for life. He has rent the fabric of civility and respect for the rule of law and democratic procedures that hitherto had enabled political factions to coexist and cooperate when necessary. And the fact that this liar, criminal, sociopath, authoritarian, and blatant racist still has the support of a majority of Republicans is terrifying.
