A timely warning; the parallels are terrifying. But there are also crucial distinctions we can use to our advantage to push back against the Fourth Reich:
(1) Trump’s age: He’s 78, whereas Hitler’s was in his midlife. And Trump’s mental competency is already visibly deteriorating.
(2) Germany in 1933 was in desperate straits economically; we’re not (yet!)
(3) The Republican majority in Congress is very slim, and could be reversed in two years.
At this point, I doubt that Trump could win an “enabling act” to seize absolute power (though I may be wrong, given the shameless sycophancy of his partisans!)
So we need to stay vigilant and push back-/mindfully, strategically, and relentlessly, without succumbing to anxiety or despair.
