Actually the Buddha's concept of anatman is a bit more subtle than this. It is quite akin, actually, to Lao Tzu's observation (lines 3-4 of Chapter 1): "the name that can be named is not the eternal name." In other words, as Polish philosopher Alfred Korzybski expressed it, "the map is not the territory and the name is not the thing named." And similarly, the Buddha's last advice to his disciples was "be a light unto yourself." That is, don't take my word for anything, but test my teachings for yourself...
