All this intergenerational sniping is tedious, self-indulgent, and stupid, no matter which generation is sniping at their elders’ or children’s generation. Did “we” (the boomers) destroy their future prospects with our blind indifference to the long-term dire consequences of our consumerism? Of course! But we also created the present, interconnected virtual reality which they now inhabit—which is their second home. And they are as addicted to blind consumerism as we are! So we should all stop pointing fingers at our imagined stereotypes of old or young, and getting busy planning how to survive the rapidly encroaching global collapse into chaos that has actually been inevitable since the first steam engine pumped water out of a coal mine near Newcastle, England, igniting the fossil fuel-based Industrial Revolution. From there on, we were doomed to a runaway feedback loop of population, technological innovation, and affluence shadowed by poverty and exploitation—with the spin-off effects of pollution, loss of habitat and biodiversity, and alienation, reducing active citizens into passive consumers. It’s all coming to a head now, but will end soon. But so will most of us, young and old alike!
