All true, of course. Had the Exxon board of directors done the morally defensible thing by acting on the findings of their own scientists about the existential threat of rising temperatures from carbon emissions…they would have lost out in their ongoing competition with other, equally unscrupulous competitors in the oil industry. And if politicians had actually listened to climate scientists, their biggest donors would have switched their loyalties to their competitors as well. When Carter threatened to phase out fossil fuels gradually by funding research into sun and wind power, the big corporations all ganged up and threw their support behind Reagan, and Carter was ousted by a landslide
