An intriguing exercise in seeking out the best places left to weather the apocalypse. But it would be good to remember a refrain from a Bob Marley tune: “You can’t run away from yourself.” Anyone, that is, who tries to emigrate to these idyllic places will carry their own cultural baggage (as well as their own pathogens) which the local inhabitants will not exactly welcome with open arms. It’s better, if possible, to start where you are, learn your own bioregion, cultivate a diverse network of friends and acquaintances, get involved in local politics, and grow gardens, grow community, and grow global (and local) awareness—wherever you are. We are all Gaians after all, all participants in the “inescapable network of mutuality” that is our true and only home.
