Everything you say here is true, and I wish I could share your optimism, but your argument overlooks one important thing: net energy, which is the energy you have left after the energy you invest to get that energy. Quite simply, you cannot build out an industrial scale solar and wind energy infrastructure by using solar and wind energy! You first have to “burn stuff”—lots of high-energy stuff like coal, oil, and gas—to manufacture that infrastructure. If we had started doing this 30 or 40 years ago (when the reality of climate change became clear to scientists, but was dismissed by right wing propaganda), we might have been able to build our such a renewable infrastructure. But as we all know, short-term corporate greed got in the way… And now, I fear, it’s far too late. So. We need to focus on relocalizing our economy—by growing gardens, growing community, and growing awareness.
