Honest biblical research begins with the assumption that all texts have a history and that meanings and connotations change with time and translation—and with the ideological ax to grind that any particular group brings to the task of interpretation. The Council of Nicaea, for example, was convened by Constantine to resolve the bitter, relentless squabbling of rival Christian sects and impose ideological conformity, so that Christianity could become the state religion of Rome and only the “orthodox” (who agreed to the official ideology) could get tax breaks!
