Thank you for speaking hard but necessary truths. I agree with Erik, however, that you are placing an undue burden on the film “Don’t Look Up” because the film is merely a satirical allegory (and a painfully hilarious one at that) which does not propose or endorse anything. To your main point, I would love to believe that a “soft landing” from our overshoot predicament is possible, through voluntary population reduction, abandonment of fossil fuel dependence, degrowth, or whatever other imaginary awakening of humanity we might envision…but I see no possibility of this. The best we can hope for is that the coming inevitable mass die-off will not be total—and that enough people at the grassroots see what’s coming and plan accordingly—by growing gardens, growing community, and growing awareness, while cultivating the “four immeasurables” at home: gratitude and benevolence, compassion, selfless joy, and equanimity. Then connecting with others to learn, teach, heal, and create Gaia.
