How unspeakably sad to see a good, kind man with a long and distinguished political career humiliated by a vile thug and ridiculed by the press simply because old age has caught up with him and (like King Lear) he is deluded into thinking that he still has the power and respect to which he was long entitled.
And as for the rest of us, Edgar’s mournful eulogy at the bitter end of the play rings sadly true today:
“The oldest hath borne most; we that are young/Shall never see so much, nor live so long…”
Indeed, if the lying criminal fascist thug wins, none of us will live much longer, as our nation and the principles upon which it was founded go down the toilet and tyranny and violence reign supreme.
