I agree entirely that consumerism is the fatal addiction that is destroying our planet, and that is reinforced 24/7 by the global market economy — a maximizing system that must endlessly grow to survive. And this addiction is the terminal cancer of the Earth. It’s rooted in the inherent arithmetical logic of the money game, where more is always better. But in reality, throughout the natural world (including humanity) a logic of optimization — not maximization — applies: enough is enough, and too much or too little of anything is toxic to the system. So our only remaining hope for survival is to find ways to trigger the spontaneous remission of the cancer of the Earth. My own solution? Grow gardens, grow community, and grow awareness.
