I agree entirely that there is far more spiritual integrity in Catholic and Orthodox churches than in the shameless, hateful, self-serving ideology of evangelical "megachurches." But these more traditional Christians still have a basic flaw in their belief system: confusing "faith" with "belief." The difference is simple: Faith unites us; beliefs divide us. Faith is universal--it's awareness of the Sacred. whether explicitly or implicitly. Beliefs are as individual as fingerprints, so if someone tells you what you "have to believe" in order to go to heaven and avoid eternal damnation, they are full of crap.
Jesus had a very good response when asked how to tell the difference between true and false prophets--that is, how to evaluate another person's belief system: "By their fruits shall ye know them." NOT, that is, by the ideational or mythic contents of their beliefs, but rather by the effect their belief system has on their behavior in the world: whether it makes them kind, generous, and tolerant, or mean, greedy. and bigoted. So we need not care what anyone else chooses to believe--that is up to them. As Bob Dylan sang, "You go your way and I'll go mine."
