I agree entirely with your analysis, but there may be a more skillful way of dealing with this conundrum than simply doing more of the same: trying to wake people by guilt-tripping, fear, or other ways of shaking them vigorously. If anyone has ever awoken you in this way, you probably remember how much you resented it!

The other, more skillful option, is an invitational approach, which takes the following form: “If you do X, you will have a more enjoyable, less stressful life.” X, of course, could be filled in by any adaptation that encourages people to grow gardens, grow community, and grow awareness.
