I agree; we need a “day of remembrance” to displace this Illusory holiday..The Germans have done a much better job of public remembrance and penitence for the sins of their past than we have, and their culture is healthier and more compassionate as a result. There is nothing wrong with gratitude, however, so perhaps we could reframe it as a day of gratitude for our life on this planet and for ALL our ancestors, remembrance of our past depredations, and resolution to honor and respect the dignity and humanity of all peoples and the sacredness of all living beings.
