I am a bit concerned about this. I’m all in favor of research, but not when it potentially punctures the Earth’s crust, and risks unforeseen and irreversible consequences if the hot, liquid mantle comes bubbling up to the surface. I think research scientists need to deliberate carefully and follow a precautionary principle here, as they have, for example, with cloning humans or genetically altering fetuses before birth.
