I discovered Daly’s visionary ideas of a steady state economy years ago, in his book For The Common Good, and loved it. The problem, as you note, is that a top-down reversal of a prevailing economic order in which everyone is invested is, sadly, impossible—despite the fact that an endless growth economy is suicidal on a finite planet! No one addicted to the idea that more is always better will ever be convinced that enough is enough!

Change from the bottom up, however, is more plausible, though it takes a lot longer—probably too long to do us any good in the aggregate. But for the “saving remnant”—those of us who are fully aware that we are a part of nature and not apart from it—we can embrace the ideas of a steady state economy in our own lives by growing gardens, growing community, and growing awareness. That is, by relocalizing our economies as much as possible starting today, and forming Garden Guilds with likeminded neighbors to share produce, skills, labor, and ideas.
