I entirely share your contempt for the institution of monarchy (Tom Paine is also an icon of mine!) but I do not hold Charles himself in contempt. Charles is as much a victim of this institution as a perpetrator. As a person, he is (1) starchy and hidebound as any other royal but (2) underneath it all, a decent man who suffers deeply from the ironies of his inherited role, which he never asked for. He cares deeply about the poor, and about the perilous state of the planet, but the ridiculous institution of which he is now the obligatory figurehead makes it impossible for him to actually do anything about it!
