I have nothing against dreaming big dreams or thinking outside the box. But this, like everything else, is a useful habit of mind up to a point, beyond which it becomes fatuous and self-indulgent. And with this harebrained scheme of wasting vast resources to colonize a lifeless planet simply so that he and a handful of his super rich buddies can escape the mess they’ve made of this planet, that line of “fatuous and self-indulgent” has been crossed. No free oxygen, hardly any water, no life at all…if that’s the real estate they crave, let them have it, and good riddance. Meanwhile, truly visionary thinkers back here on our home planet will spend their time and energy working WITH our unique and priceless biosphere to sequester carbon in topsoil at an accelerated rate while growing abundant food in our own backyards and sharing our knowledge and skills with others so they can do likewise. As Norman Myers’s put it years ago, “We have two choices: a Gaian future or no future.” Our fossil fuel-driven global market economy has already chosen the latter, but individually, we are still free to choose the former—a Gaian future—by growing gardens, growing community, and growing awareness.
