I see your point. But you may go overboard in asserting that ANY effort to restrain a young child's exuberant behavior is demeaning or emotionally crippling. Skillfully done, parental curbs on exuberance can gradually, in age-sensitive ways, lead children to recognize that they need to respect others' "space," especially in public places.
