I think this is probably right. As biologist Lynn Margulis once oberved, humans are an exceptionally successful species (having colonized the entire planet) but exceptionally successful species never last long--because they inevitably overshoot their resource base (in this case, the entire planet) and die off en masse as a consequence. This is, unfortunately, our fate.
