If you look at the world religions today, they fall into 2 broad categories: fundamentalists and latitudinarians. Fundamentalists (mostly the Abrahamic religions of the West (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) begin with monotheism (only one true god—theirs—and only one “chosen people”—them) and therefore have intolerance of religious diversity in their DNA. Conversely, the Dharmic religions of the East (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, etc.) are essentially latitudinarians; their common major premise is the equality of all people, tolerance of diversity, and the freedom to choose whatever wisdom tradition works best for them as individuals. I choose the latter, thanks. If anyone tells me that their religion is the only “true” religion and that I am doomed to perdition if I don’t convert, I have only one response: “Balderdash!”
