“When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government and to establish new guards for our future security.” –The Declaration of Independence
Here is the letter I’m sending to my Senators and Representatives. Feel free to copy or adapt it…
Dear Senator/Rep. — — — — — ,
“When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government and to establish new guards for our future security.” –The Declaration of Independence
As you well know, our nation now faces an unprecedented challenge to our basic democratic institutions by a lawless would-be dictator, who is utterly devoid of integrity, compassion, or moral character, and who, in collusion with an unelected billionaire (Elon Musk) to whom he has given unlimited power, and in service to the oligarchic cabal known as “Project 2025,” is systematically taking a wrecking ball to many vital institutions of our national government — from the National Institute of Health to the US Agency for International Development (and many others) — all in contempt of court orders and the rule of law. As such, he is posing a massive threat to the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of dedicated career civil servants, and to the millions of people and institutions throughout the world that they serve.
For all these reasons, I am strongly urging you to take the bold step of introducing an impeachment resolution to remove Donald Trump from office. I understand that this is a huge and risky step, but here are two compelling arguments in favor of immediate impeachment:
1. Under Article 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment to our Constitution, Donald Trump is constitutionally prohibited from serving in any elected office of the U.S. Government, because, on January 6, 2021, he directly incited, and refused to restrain, a violent mob attack on the US Capital, for the express purpose of shutting down our Constitutionally mandated Joint Session of Congress to certify the free and fair election of Joseph R. Biden as President. This, by any other definition, was an act of high treason, blatantly violating his Oath of Office, for which he was duly impeached, but acquitted by a single vote from a supine Republican majority. But the facts of his lawless and disgraceful actions of that day were shown on television throughout the nation, thoroughly examined and documented by a bipartisan Congressional committee, and included in a thoroughly researched and well-documented indictment by the Department of Justice, under the dedicated leadership of Special Prosecutor Jack Smith, in the case of the aptly named United States vs. Donald Trump. The US Supreme Court shamelessly acted to delay the prosecution of this case as long as possible, so that it could not come to trial until after the election, and they granted Trump blanket immunity from prosecution — itself a violation of the letter and spirit of our Constitution and a right previously reserved only for kings — after he was elected.
2. Since he was elected (despite his Constitutional disqualification), Donald Trump has issued a wide array of unconstitutional executive orders, demolishing long-established vital institutions of the Federal Government, on which literally millions of people here and throughout the world depend for their livelihoods and even their survival.
In short, as the Declaration of Independence — our national charter — states unequivocally, the sole legitimate purpose of government, here or anywhere, is to serve the public interest; as they put it, to “secure the rights” of the people to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” It is not to enrich his already fabulously wealthy oligarchic cronies at our expense by trashing the vital institutions created to serve the public interest!
In these dire times, your own highest duty as a US Senator is unequivocally spelled out in this same second paragraph of the Declaration: “When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government and to establish new guards for our future security.” As elected officials, you have that power; we don’t. Please save us from this dangerous despot by impeaching Donald Trump!
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
