Indeed there is much to fear in the coming times. But chronic dread, however justified, can be paralyzing, leaving us demoralized. I am therefore striving to leaven my own growing dread with “energetic progress in the good” which differs for everyone, depending on our interests, passions, and concerns. So I keep myself on an even keel by (1) limiting the time spent reading or watching the news or doomscrolling on the internet, however addictive these pastimes may be for us—for agonizing over the horrific news does nothing to ameliorate it. (2) maintaining a daily practice of gentle exercise (tai chi) and meditation to restore my health and equanimity; (3) doing something useful and good every day— whether that is cultivating old and new friendships, taking my wife out to a restaurant or movie, writing a letter to my elected senators or representatives, reading a good book, and generally devoting time to learning, teaching, healing, and creating. Tyrannical regimes and oligarchies collapse when people cultivate resilience by growing gardens, growing community, and growing awareness…
