It's important to remember the last, truly dark moments in our history. In the first few years of Lincoln's administration, when the Confederate traitors were winning every battle, and the death count was steadily rising, requiring him to institute a military draft that provoked savage riots in New York and elsewhere, Lincoln's public support was in the basement--likely far less than 38%. His beloved young son had just died horribly, and his neurotic wife was spinning out of control. Many in Congress wanted to end the appalling bloodshed by just letting the South secede, and "copperheads" in Congress were actively supporting the Southern insurrection. Not only that, but his own cabinet was full of guys like Salmon Chase, who were clearly eyeing a primary challenge in 1864, and only too happy to see him falter. Yet through sheer tenacity and character, he prevailed--even at the tragic cost of his own life. Biden may or may not have Lincoln's or Roosevelt's amazing strength of character, but he has already shown resilience and determination, despite appalling odds against him., to defend democracy and decency against bloody fascism, both at home and abroad. Don't count him out yet!
