It’s kind of hard to have a “peaceful Palestinian state” if you have armed Israeli settlers regularly grabbing land for themselves to set up their own, exclusive, heavily armed colonies on the West Bank lands where most Palestinians reside. And even harder when walls, barbed wire, checkpoints, and armed brutality make them feel like prisoners in their own putative “state.” When Rabin made a good faith effort to resolve the dispute by negotiating a two-state solution, he was gunned down—not by Palestinians but by his own Israeli fanatics. Everything has causes and conditions—this is the universal law of Karma. And when people lose hope, they turn to murderous hatred. Unfortunately, on both sides, that hatred is sanctioned by their own toxic monotheism—the conflation of their own tribal deity with the “one true God” and therefore they see their own enemies as enemies of God, with whom compromise is blasphemy.
