Our western industrial civilization is collapsing, no doubt, into a terrifying vortex of ignorance, greed, hatred, denial, and despair — but regeneration is possible — not from the top down, but from the soil under our feet up. It begins with integrating “vertical” and “horizontal” healing. By “vertical” healing, I mean repairing the connection — severed since Descartes — of body, mind, and spirit, through such Eastern disciplines as yoga, tai chi, and meditation. By “horizontal” healing, I mean reconnecting our selves with our communities and our living planet. The three essential disciplines for accomplishing this reintegration are meditation, Satyagraha, and permaculture: growing gardens, growing community, and growing awareness. In this way, we plant the seeds of regeneration amidst the ruins of our alienated, planet-destroying global market economy.
