“Revolution” is easy to say, but what does it actually mean? And what is to prevent one power-hungry elite from being displaced by another (often at a hideous cost in human suffering)? In fact, every “revolution” since the fall of the Bastille has followed this pattern: the violent overthrow of one hideous regime by another, which ends up equally oppressive and corrupt. The ONLY alternative is Satyagraha—the exacting discipline of nonviolent noncooperation with evil that is mindful, strategic, and relentless: the path of Gandhi, King, Mandela, Wangari Maathai, Vaclav Havel, and Vandana Shiva…and of all Gaian Bodhisattvas, past, present, and future.
