Thank you, Craig. This is an eloquent and perceptive essay that makes an excellent point: our past shortsightedness need not doom us to a short-sighted and catastrophic future. Pursuing the same “why?” questions can, with determination, lead us to a soft landing, even if a massive die-off from our past hubris, greed, and folly is now inevitable. The best we can do individually, in my view is to (1) grow gardens (so we can eat!); (2) grow community (so we can survive by learning from and teaching others, as well as looking out for one another if disaster strikes) and (3) grow awareness (by learning, teaching, healing. And creating a symbiotic, rather than parasitic, relationship to our biological support system, Gaia.
