Thank you, Craig. I really appreciate the depth of insight you bring to these current topics where so many other writers are either credulous or dismissive. You consistently probe the deeper, more relevant questions that are often obscured by the more shallow, sensationalistic claims we see out here in cyberspace. As Yuval Noah Harari has pointed out, AI systems can only master language itself; not the lived experiences to which our language refers. In Saussure’s terminology, they can reliably connect the signifier to the signified, but not to the referent. Because the referent is our experience itself. As Alfred Korzybski put it, “the map is not the territory and the name is not the thing named.”
