Thank you for an excellent, probing assessment of this appalling Trump phenomenon as both symptom and exacerbation of our national decline. I wish I could share your hope that with patience and wisdom we can escape this accelerating vortex, but I see little chance of that! The question then becomes, how to endure and resist this descent into darkness? My best answer, however inadequate, is to study and practice Satyagraha, the Gandhi-King-Mandela discipline of organized nonviolent noncooperation with evil—mindfully, strategically, relentlessly. This requires, of course, leadership with both integrity and charisma, for which these three and others (like Vandana Shiva and Wangari Maathai) can serve as excellent role models.
