However, please don’t make the “nothing but…” category error. These hateful white thugs are, indeed, a symptom of a deeply rooted social pathology in our country, but they are not “America.” Every culture — our own included, has a Cain and Abel side to it: the capacity for unspeakable horror and sublime beauty. Just as Hitler was not Germany and Stalin was not Russia, so Trump and his vicious cult following are not “America.” They are a cancer on the body politic.
