Thank you for sharing this, David. I am a practicing Buddhist, and I have been a big fan of Lao Tzu since I discovered him in my mid-twenties (I am 70 now), and you are right on target here.

I still remember the year I taught in China (1986-87) when, just for fun, I wrote the first line of the Tao Te Ching on the board in Chinese (pinyin) and had my students translate it into English: "Tao ke tao, fe chang tao" Remarkably, they came up with about 25 entirely different translations!
