Our fatal personality flaw as social animals means that—especially in times of stress and uncertainty—we can easily be seduced by charismatic thugs who then, intoxicated with power, turn into monsters. History is littered with such thugs, all the way from Genghis Khan, Timurlane and Napoleon to Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Saddam Hussein, Kim Il Sung and his malignant dynasty, etc.
