Thank you for this excellent expose of our “market society” and its persistent delusions. The fundamental problem here is the rank incompatibility between the logic of the money game and the intrinsic rules of the biosphere. I summarize these two rule systems as “Glomart” ( the Global Market Economy) and “Gaia” ( the living Earth). The two essential production rules of Glomart are these: more is always better and you are what you own. The innate production rules of Gaia, our biological support system, are the exact opposite: Enough is enough (the principle of optimality) and You are what you do (both to survive and to sustain the larger complex adaptive systems that in turn sustain you). Indigenous societies worldwide have always followed the rules of Gaia, but the maximizing rules of Glomart—the money system—make it a cancer on our biosphere. And unfortunately, that cancer is now terminal.
