A first possible step might be to seek consensus on the major premise set forth with admirable clarity in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:
1. That all [humans] are created equal, specifically in the sense that
2. They have inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and that
3. The sole legitimate purpose of government is to secure these rights, and that
4. The sole basis for legitimacy (and just power) of such government is the consent of [ALL]the governed (obtained by free and fair elections, internationally monitored, if need be.) On this basis, residents of the Levant (both Israeli and Palestinians) must negotiate to choose either a one-state or a two-state solution. But these principles are non-negotiable if peace and justice are to be achieved.
