Thank you for this lucid assessment of our energy predicament, though you may be underestimating the rate at which global climate destabilization from energy imbalances caused by fossil fuel emissions will wreak havoc on our global agricultural infrastructure, leading to mass starvation and heat stroke, starting in the Global South and moving steadily northward—coupled with polar melting, north and south, leading to accelerated sea level rise, mass inland migration of refugees from coastal cities worldwide, depleted aquifers (especially in the overpopulated American Southwest!) and rapid release of fossil methane from melting permafrost. All these could accelerate the rate of global economic, industrial, and political collapse into chaos and violence. So what should we tell our children? My short answer is always the same: starting today, grow gardens, grow community, and grow awareness—by learning, teaching, healing, and creating. The more contiguous, close-knit communities we have, the better we will be able to adapt to the catastrophic end of modern industrial civilization.
