Thank you for your insights, Tara, on the sense of ennui, dread, and vertigo we are all feeling during this bizarre global quarantine with no end in sight. We are social animals by nature, and so isolation, in itself, takes a heavy toll on our emotional well-being.

My own most adaptive response has been to treat this time like a Buddhist meditation retreat, by giving myself a rigorous course in basic meditation techniques (shamatha) courtesy of Alan Wallace, the brilliant and eminent scholar of Tibetan Buddhism. You can find a complete meditation retreat on Shamatha (quiescence) meditation- the foundation of serious Buddhist practice--in 26 sessions on Youtube:

So each day, after breakfast, I start the day by doing my exercise routine (Qigong and Tai Chi) and then going in to listen to one of Alan's wise and witty Dharma Talks, after which I set a timer and meditate for 24 minutes. It has made a huge difference in my state of mind, giving me far greater equanimity and focus that I otherwise would have had.
