Thank you for your latest impassioned outcry against the manifold horrors of Trump. I am not superstitious, but if I were, I would be convinced that Trump is the Antichrist, the Beast of the Apocalypse, the Devil incarnate, the Father of Lies. I think Carl Jung would identify him as the surfacing of America’s “Shadow”—the dark side of our national character we have always tried to deny and suppress: our shameless greed, our willful ignorance, our hypocrisy, our racism, et al.
When such a primordial monster appears, normal political opposition is futile. We need something stronger—arising from the grassroots, and from our highest and best selves. This is why I have embraced Satyagraha—Gandhi’s brilliant, spiritually grounded, strategic approach to nonviolent resistance. So I’m promoting the idea that we all start small “Satyagraha Study Groups”—no more than 10 people each, to read and discuss three books for starters:
1. On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder;
2. Gandhi on Nonviolence, a selection of brief Gandhi quotes edited by Thomas Merton;
3. From Dictatorship to Democracy by Gene Sharp (a case study of successful nonviolent campaigns worldwide that brought down tyrannical regimes)
If such a grassroots movement went viral, Trump’s oligarchy would be toast! Pass it on!
