The contradiction you perceive here is only apparent. The key to nonviolent resistance is to hate the sin but love the sinner; a point emphasized by Gandhi and King alike. But again "love" here does not refer to anything sappy or sentimental; they're not talking valentines. They refer rather to the ancient (and modern) Greek concept of Agape--referring to the intuitive recognition that hateful, vicious people are essentially the same as us, but twisted by their own life experiences. and that by hating them, we become them. As Bob Dylan put it, "Don't hate nothin' at all except hatred."
