The rage and resentment you express here is understandable—even justifiable. But how useful is it, really?
Our current global plight is rooted not just in “patriarchy” and “capitalism”—those conveniently abstract bugbears we all love to hate. Rather is is rooted in (1) the discovery and exploitation of a vast and seemingly inexhaustible source of cheap net energy (fossil fuels) and (2) a long-established zero-sum global market economy based on money that arose with the agricultural revolution, whose production rules boiled down to “more is always better” and “what’s mine is not yours.” These two things have lead inexorably to the predicament we face today: the terminal cancer of the Earth. Our only adaptive option now is to grow gardens, grow community, and grow awareness by withdrawing from the money economy and planting the seeds of a Gaian future by creating inclusive subcultures dedicated to learning, teaching, healing, and creating.
