There are two contradictory aspects of all monotheistic religions. The good side is summed up in the “Great Commandment” (which can be found, in variant forms, in all three): “Love God and (therefore) love your neighbor as yourself.” The bad side is summed up in all three as variations on the basic notion that “There is only one true God and We (not you) are his chosen people.” The first of these leads to decent, compassionate behavior. The second, to poisonous religious bigotry and atrocities. So I don’t give a damn what anyone chooses to believe; all that matters is how their beliefs are reflected in their attitudes and behavior toward others, regardless of whether or not those others share their ideology. Or as Jesus put it succinctly, “By their fruits shall ye know them.”
