There is (at least) one more story, however. I call it the "saving remnant" story, of which a typical example is Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Sower" (1993)--which is set, ironically, in California in 2024-26 or thereabouts.

The storyline goes roughly as follows: as civilization inexorably collapses into chaos and violence, political tyranny, and corporate slavery, a small group of survivors (whose suburban homes were ransacked and burned) go north on foot, following the protagonist's new religion, "Earthseed," conveyed through short verses at the beginning of each chapter--verses that champion resilience in the face of (generally catastrophic) change. Once settled on land they acquire in Northern California, they sow the seeds of a future civilization based on compassion for all who join them, a strong, perpetual self-defense against marauders, and living with nature, rather than at nature's expense. This book resonates with me during these dark times.
