This approach--building an indoor life support system to replace the global life support system that is our inheritance--may work for a while, but only among the well-to-do. And they (we, here in the urbanized industrial North)will therefore survive at the expense of everyone else, since our efforts to air-condition all our indoor farms, homes, and cities will require huge amounts of readily available net energy--that is, fossil fuels--which will hasten the superheating of the entire planet, and especially tropical regions. A mass die-off will ensue, until the Owning Class will find themselves in shrinking, fiercely defended islands of temporary prosperity in a tumultuous sea of violence, starvation, and death.
