This has all the earmarks of an urban myth. How did he know this man was Hitler? Hitler at that time was a nonentity, a nobody, and I seriously doubt whether Tandey would have asked him his name! And even if it is true, I commend Tandey for showing compassion, even in the heat of a horrific war, rather than blind hatred for an anonymous enemy soldier. There is no way he could have foretold the future.

And given the desperate conditions of Germany in the Great Depression and the demoralizing effects on Germany of Versailles and its aftermath, some other toxic demagogue might have likewise taken advantage of this condition to rally his people against the western "oppressors," gain the backing of international financiers to rebuild Germany by crushing labor unions, and scapegoat the Jews...
