This is a deeply insightful assessment of the fundamental incompatibility between the money-based global market economy (“Glomart”) and our unique, life-sustaining biosphere (“Gaia”). Glomart logic requires transforming nature into commodities in pursuit of endless growth of production and consumption—and hence of population as well. Gaia, however, operates on a logic of optimization: too much or too little of any value is toxic to the system. These two complex adaptive systems—Glomart and Gaia—are fundamentally incompatible; Glomart is a cancer on Gaia. Your excellent suggestions provide possibilities for causing that cancer to go into spontaneous remission. But for me, that must start at the local level—by growing gardens, growing community, and growing awareness. You have made a superb contribution to the latter!
