This is not, I’m afraid, a very useful line of thinking (Sartre’s “what if…”question, that is.) As Bob Dylan once said, “Most people don’t do what they believe in; they just do what’s most convenient and then they repent.” This could be the epitaph of humanity.
So our collective challenge is this: how can we make ecologically responsible behavior MORE convenien — rather than less convenient — than carelessly trashing the only living planet we’ll ever know? If this is not possible, we’re doomed.
