This sets a horrible precedent—beyond all the dangers to all of us which you delineate here. And that is, they are using legislation to define scientific categories! That is a war on science, for the impermanence of all of our ways of defining and classifying things is a cornerstone of the scientific method. All our categories must be open to reassessment based on further research. While it used to be assumed that male and female were fixed, irrevocable categories, further research has shown, in all sorts of ways, that there is a hormonal continuum—not a clear digital division—between male and female characteristics, and we all have a unique “mix” of these hormones. So this legislation is not only denying the lived experience of trans people and targeting them for persecution, while codifying men’s and women’s social roles, but going against science itself. Welcome to the Middle Ages!
