To be sure. That's why it is best to start this process BEFORE things get desperate. Think, for example, of a herd of Wildebeests migrating on the African savannah, surrounded and harassed at all times by predators like lions, hyenas, etc. How do they survive? By sheer numbers, staying close together, keeping the young protected within. The same principle applies to us.
Imagine neighborhoods forming Garden Guilds NOW, while it is relatively safe, and learing how to collaborate in growing their own food and sharing knowledge and skills while respecting each other's privacy and autonomy, all while periodically hosting mindful discussions of the growing threats to our global civilization, and useful local initiatives to prepare for these threats. Then imagine that these local guilds form larger, community-based networks to share ideas and keep in touch. Imagine a publicity campaign built around the Garden Guild logo and slogan--"Grow Gardens, Grow Community, Grow Awareness"--a lawn sign or bumper sticker that is openly invitational and does not offend anyone. Add in social media and a website to make the idea go viral. And there is your (virtual) Wildebeest herd, able to withstand external threats from predatory gangs by developing habits of collaboration and mutual assistance. And through this process, steadily disseminating Permaculture ethics and practices. No one ever said it would be easy, but if you have any better ideas, let me know!
